Jeni’s reopens Columbus production kitchen

Days after announcing the return of their popular salty caramel ice cream flavor to scoop shops, we’ve gotten word of another return from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams…workers heading back into the production kitchen.

As they near the end of a summer that included a huge voluntary product recall and two production / scoop shop shutdowns due to positive tests for the bacteria listeria, Jeni’s begins taking a more hands-on role in the making of their ice cream again. The kitchen in Columbus (909 Michigan Avenue) will be used for prepping ingredients to be sent to Smith Dairy in Orville, Ohio…where the ice cream will continue to be produced. (Smith has been making Jeni’s ice cream since the second listeria discovery at the Columbus facility in June.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the work the team has done to survive this summer. The team has shown tremendous resilience. We are happy to be able to invite back kitchen production team members. We struggled through, survived and are now building momentum.”

– John Lowe, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams CEO

In July, forty production kitchen workers were offered severance packages or work inside of scoop shops. Those employees will be offered the opportunity to return to the kitchen.

The reopening of that kitchen means that customers will soon see the return of flavors including flavors Brambleberry Crisp, Goat Cheese with Red Cherries and Black Cat Espresso.  (jj)
