Return of the Jeni

Finally, the word comes from Jeni’s. The local ice cream favorite has begun production again and will reopen their stores in time for Memorial Day weekend. Jeni’s had shut down operations and issued a product recall last month due to contamination from the bacteria listeria. Since then, they have rehabbed their facilities and instituted new policies as it relates to their kitchen and product handling.

“When our shops open, the dipping cabinets will feature Salty Caramel and other signature flavors, throwbacks such as Root Beer ice cream, and our new, limited-edition ice cream, Sun-Popped Corn (made with corn from Bjorn Quorn that was, yes, popped by rays of sunshine—you are going to love this flavor by itself or with our salty caramel sauce!). We’ll be adding more flavors in the coming weeks as we return to full production and as summer progresses. Think of it as a rolling summer.”

– Jeni Britton Bauer

The company says that they have accepted an offer of help from the Smith’s dairy company in Orville, Ohio. Jeni’s has provided Smith’s with the recipes for a few flavors and they will help in production until Jeni’s can fully restock on product.

Splendid news from Jeni’s

“Mr. Sulu, stand by to take us to maximum warp.”

-Jeni Britton Bauer, Facebook post 5/11/15

In a Facebook post Monday night, Jeni of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams announced that the company would return to production this week. Fans of Jeni’s have been beside themselves since the company closed all of their shops and issued a voluntary recall of all of their products following a positive test for the listeria bacteria in a sample in Nebraska. Listeria was also later discovered in Jeni’s production kitchen. The company destroyed hundreds of thousands of pounds of ice cream, rehabbed production facilities, reworked kitchen policies and now, with Monday’s announcement, appear nearly ready to get back to work.

Splendid news, indeed!  (jj)

Source of contamination found in Jeni’s recall

A statement from Jeni’s today reveals that a spout used to fill pints is the source of listeria inside of the ice cream company’s production kitchen. For clarity sake, this spout is NOT used to fill any of the buckets sourced at Jeni’s ice cream shops, though that product will still be destroyed out of an abundance of caution.

The company has announced plans of an overhaul of their production kitchen with costs of at least $200,000. Among changes announced in regards to product creation, fresh fruits and vegetables used in ice cream prep will now be processed at a separate facility. In addition, employees are receiving training in enhanced food safety procedures.  (jj)

Update: Jeni’s massive recall

Jeni’s has released some updated information on their $2.5 million recall and Listeria contamination. In a statement from the CEO, Jeni’s said that Listeria was found in pints of their Dark Chocolate (5-025-201) and Buckeye State ice cream. In response to the contamination, they’ve cleaned their production facility and are destroying over 535,000 pounds of ice cream.* A help center was setup for anyone to contact them with questions by calling (614) 360-3905 from 9AM-5PM, Mondays to Fridays. You can also contact them by email at [email protected] and at jenis.com/recall.

*most of the ice cream will be destroyed using an anaerobic digester, which converts the dairy into electricity and a clean, natural soil fertilizer.

Stores closed as Jeni’s issues major ice cream recall

Jeni’s Spledid Ice Creams has voluntarily recalled all company products due to a possible listeria contamination. This includes all flavors and varieties of ice creams, frozen yogurts, sorbets, and ice cream sandwiches. And as part of the move, all Jeni’s shops have now closed until products can be called “safe.” Jeni’s says that the move is out of an abundance of caution following a positive test for listeria in Nebraska. (There have been no reports of illness caused by any Jeni’s products.) In a statement, Jeni’s says:

“We have decided to recall everything currently on retailer shelves, and we are closing our scoop shops until we are 100% confident every item we sell is safe. We have called in experts to help us find the root cause. We will be working with our suppliers to determine if the bacteria was introduced by one of the ingredients we use. We will not reopen the kitchen until we can ensure the safety of our customers.”

Reaction online to the Jeni’s recall was swift and mostly supportive:

thank you for being proactive and taking responsibility for your products. Thank you for putting your fans and customers first! You rock!

Send them to me. My immune system is functioning well and I loves ice cream!

Oh no! And I was going to treat myself to my first pint after my first half marathon this weekend. *tears*

Sorry to hear this, but good for Jeni’s for being so thoroughly responsive. I hope the issue is cleared up quickly. I look forward to having some Jeni’s again soon.

ugh! I recently shipped ice cream to my parents. They probably <think> I’m trying to kill them.
