Short North staple Surly Girl closes shop

614now Staff

It’s been a tough weekend for fans of the Short North. As of yesterday (April 26), Surly Girl officially closed its doors. The bar has been a Short North staple for years, but Elizabeth Lessner felt that it was time to move on to other projects. And while it might be gone, it did go out in true Surly Girl fashion by posting this (NSFW) message on Twitter and Facebook yesterday:

Rocking this joint until we run out of food or give-a-f*cks, whichever comes first…see you soon, darlings.

At least we still have that yet-to-be-announced garage sale! (deb)

Fans feel loss of Surly Girl

Fans on social media were quick to begin the mourning for Surly Girl.

I forbid it…. So very sad. Where will I get a peep-tini?? Or a surly girl pizza… Or a 6 shooter?! Or cupcake of the day. Lots of awesome memories… Thanks surly girl for your frito pie and awesomeness.

I’m very sad to hear this. Always been one of my favorites in the Short North! All the best!!!

thank you for everything in the past 10 years! I will miss the food but mostly the spinach artichoke dip (haven’t liked it anywhere else since I’ve had yours!) I have some great memories there

Where I am supposed to find delicious breakfast that suitably addresses my hangover?!? Noooooooooooooooooo

Elizabeth Lessner’s first steps onto the Columbus restaurant scene were in the Short North with Betty’s and Surly Girl. 2014 brought the end of Betty’s. And now, Lessner confirms that its the end of the line for Surly Girl. She tells the Columbus Dispatch that the restaurant has been sold and that the doors will close on April 26th. Along with the Jury Room, this makes three closings for Columbus Food League in the last year. Lessner insists however that things are just fine with the other establishments. In regard to Surly, she simply says that she has been focused on other projects and the restaurant’s other partners have their attentions spent elsewhere too.

*Fans of Betty’s and of Surly Girl will want to stay tuned for details on an upcoming sale of items from both establishments. Details of the sale are TBD.
