It wasn’t just the power outage yesterday during Oprah’s speech on the Maya Angelou forever stamp that’s making people upset. The stamp, which was championed by many like Ohio’s Rep. Joyce Beatty, was unveiled yesterday. But there’s one problem: the quote on the stamp isn’t from Angelou.
“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song,” is actually a line from Joan Walsh Anglund’s book of poems, A Cup of Sun. The postal service says they didn’t know and would have picked a different quote. I hope by “different” they mean a Maya Angelou quote, because the issue isn’t the quote, but who said it. I don’t really want to see a Maya Angelou forever stamp with the lines, ” oh, the places you’ll go!” (deb)
