Update: JJ is a boy!

The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium officially announced today their newest family member, baby JJ the western lowland gorilla. The sex of the baby is yet unknown because zoo officials want to avoid interrupting the bonding of mother Tabibu and baby JJ.

This new little gorilla is a descendant of some world-famous celebrity animals, including Mac, the zoo’s surrogate dad and father to JJ, and Colo, the first gorilla born in captivity and the longest living gorilla on record (also JJ’s grandmother). Mac was one of a set of twins, the first twin gorillas born in the western hemisphere, and Colo is almost 60 years old. Talk about breaking world records!

Follow updates about JJ on the zoo’s Facebook page, they’ll be posting pictures of their new bundle of joy as they become available.
