Believe It or Not: The Psychic Fair was Amazing
by M. Maggio

Finally, after a decade of living in Columbus, I had the great pleasure of attending the Gift of Light Expo, Psychic Science & Star Conference. Every year around this time I see their janky road signs and every year I get pumped up to go and then I just kind of decide to keep that part of my personality buried deep within my solar plexus chakra—but not this year.

I know you’re already asking, what exactly is a “Psychic Science & Star Conference?” Well, it’s everything from live channeling of extra-terrestrials (so sad I missed that workshop) and digital aura readings (apparently my root chakra is sucking the life out of me) to John Edwards-style group psychic readings and countless booths filled with cosmic healing equipment.

As we walked into the excessively drafty Ohio State Expo Center, we were greeted by the calming notes of a long haired man playing a wooden flute. He is pictured above if you didn’t get that. We did a lap around the venue and found some strange and wonderful things: vendors selling healing crystals, Talisman Discs (also used for healing), and one vendor selling what looked like a giant alien head (unsure if used for healing). Then we decided to join a small group of strangers and sit in on a live psychic reading.

A young man—who looked more like an adjunct CCAD professor than a psychic—told us a little about himself, and a lot about ourselves. His eyes looked past the crowd as he scanned for the “spiritual guardians who were calling to him the loudest.” He then gave brief readings to a handful of unsuspecting people who seemed more than impressed by his accuracy. So naturally, I decided to pop over to his booth for a private reading after the show. And it was intense.

When I sat down with the psychic, he placed his hand on mine and asked me to take a deep breath and clear my mind. The first thing he asked was if I had a sister (which I do) and said that he felt she and I have a very strong connection—one that extends beyond this lifetime—and that we are “twin flames.” I’m not exactly sure what “twin flames” means, but from what I gather, it seems comparable to the yin and the yang. He also said that the connection my sister and I have tends to waver between nurturing and destructive because we’re similarly strong-willed women.

For some background here, my sister and I are 10 years apart, but we’ve been through some rough patches together but have always had each other’s backs. And even though she’s a decade younger than me, she doesn’t hesitate to kick my ass if (and when) I deserve it. It sounds strange, but it’s something I’ve always admired about her.

The psychic went on to say that I’m an old soul, and that I was a moon in a past life. (I know that part sounds sort of insane, but I don’t care because that just makes me feel nice.) He then said, unprompted and with remarkable accuracy, that one of my spiritual guardians wouldn’t quit saying “something about water,” and asked if I was afraid of water. I told him that, since I’ve never actually learned how to swim, I’ve never been very comfortable in the water—he told me that I had to conquer this fear, and gave me some actionable advice on how to do so. He said to start in the bathtub; submerge my head under water and focus on my heartbeat as a way to center and calm myself. I told him that sounded terrifying, and he told me that was exactly why I needed to do it.

So, yeah. Maybe there are some psychics who are definitely bullshit, but this dude was legit at least in my mind. He even knew that I have a sad dog with abandonment issues and urinary tract problems. Like, what?
