Ohio State cancer database is a boon to researchers
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center has teamed up with the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla. to create an exhaustive database of cancer research.
Dubbed ORIEN, or The Oncology Research Information Exchange Network, it is a collection of over 150,000 patient records and tissue samples, the likes of which has never been seen before, and it’s attracting national attention.
An easily searchable database of patient records on one of the world’s deadliest diseases is an invaluable tool to clinicians and researcher, not to mention patients, and ORIEN is the first and largest of its kind.
Without any recruiting or advertising, nine research institutions have already jumped on board only a year after its inception.
While it’s too early to say whether a breakthrough will result from ORIEN, for now it looks like it has some serious momentum, and when it comes to the fight against cancer, information is power.
