Heroin Overdoses Going Up — Deaths are Dropping

The heroin problem isn’t going away, and it’s not getting significantly better — but people aren’t dying from overdosing as much as they were, and according to 10tv reports, that’s a step in the right direction.

Comparatively, this year has had some of the highest heroin overdoses Ohio has ever seen, but the death count at the hands of a heroin user is going down thanks to government initiatives that allowed for naloxone , a drug that reverses the effects of an overdoses, to be available and easily accessible to as many people as possible.

While some may question the life-saving drug to be a crutch, Marion Police Major Jay McDonald said to 10tv that attacking the problem where it starts, with the drug dealers, is a better goal for law enforcement to have.

Mental Health Board Executive Director, Brad DeCamp said to 10tv that taking the opportunity to save lives by providing naloxone gives an addict the chance to intervene when they most need it.
