BREAKING: Explosion & Two-Alarm Fire on West Broad

614now Staff

A gas leak and alleged explosion has caused a two-alarm fire on the 2800 block of West Broad Street, near Hague Avenue.

Firefighters were called to the scene at a shopping center where authorities immediately began evacuating patrons and employees of the center, of which there is a Domino’s and several local doctors and practitioners.

Officials on the scene are saying that underground drilling in the parking lot area by the Domino’s Pizza struck a gas line which then allowed the ovens in the Domino’s to ignite the gas causing the explosion and destroying the surrounding buildings. One is thought to be injured.

Fire crews are currently evacuating buildings one block in every direction to keep people safe from any additional damage that could occur. Broad Street is closed from Hague Ave. to Binns Blvd. currently, and is expected to be closed through rush hour so seek alternative routes to avoid the backup.
