Biden speaks on overtime at Jeni’s, loves ice cream

United States Vice President Joe Biden came to Columbus today to give a news conference from the headquarters of Jeni’s Ice Cream.

He detailed new rules for salaried overtime workers, presumably after he enjoyed a scoop of brambleberry crisp.

The speech began on a light note at 2:30 when he opened by saying, “My name is Joe Biden and I love ice cream.”

He quickly redirected the speech towards policy, saying that the proposed expansion of overtime for salaried workers would expand the middle class by ensuring workers are compensated for the hours they put in.

Right now salaried workers receive mandatory overtime pay worth 1.5 times their salary for any work past 40 hours a week only if they make less than $23,660 a year. The new rules would raise that cap to $47,500.

That means an extra 4.2 million salaried workers would become eligible for mandatory overtime pay.

Right now, only 7 percent of full-time, salaried American workers receive mandatory overtime pay. The new rules would raise that number to 35 percent.

Compare both of those numbers with the 62 percent of workers that were covered in 1975.

Biden said the new rules will either reduce salaried workers’ hours or increase the size of their paychecks, a win-win for workers.

But business groups say the new rules complicate scheduling, and that salaried workers might have to be converted to hourly ones.

5/17/16: Biden comes to Columbus to visit Jeni’s

Who knew that Jeni’s Ice Cream was good enough to draw the Vice President into town?

Evidently they must be making some high quality treats, because Biden chose the headquarters for the Columbus creamery as the locale for a speech on the economy he’s making tomorrow.

The speech is expected to happen at about 2 p.m.

Though details on the speech haven’t been released, Jeni’s recent huge influx of capital from a Boston investment firm and their status as a rising small business could give some indication of what the speech will focus on.

Check back tomorrow for details on what the Vice President has to say!
