Ohio Senate Passes Abortion “Heartbeat Bill”

The Ohio Senate has officially passed a measure Tuesday that bans abortions after a heartbeat is detectable. While originally thought that the Ohio Senate would be a roadblock to the controversial and potentially unconstitutional bill, it was passed 21-11 after it was added as an amendment to an unrelated bill dealing with child abuse.

The new House Bill 493 returns to the House so they may approve the Senate changes, but that is looking likely as it was the House that originally approved the “Heartbeat Bill.”

The bill now heads to the Ohio State House. If signed into law, it could effectively outlaws abortions as early as 6 weeks in the state of Ohio.

Alabama was the first state to pass such a bill, but it later died in session. A similar law was deemed unconstitutional in Arkansas.

Kasich has reportedly had issues with the bill, but no word from his camp on whether this will be signed.
