Self-driving semis coming to Cbus as part of Smart City grant

Imagine you’re driving with your son or daughter on Alum Creek Drive and from the back seat they’re enticing truck drivers to honk their horns.

Before long, they might have less luck than usual, because not every semi truck will have a driver.

It sounds like science fiction, but as a part of Columbus’ $50M Smart City grant win, driverless semi-trucks will soon be on the roadways.

The plan is to have “platoons” of two trucks–one with a driver and one without. The driverless truck will have its steering and braking closely synced up with the manned truck, allowing for closer follow distances, less labor and less traffic congestion.

In Columbus’ application for the Smart City grant, it called truck platoons “a stepping stone” towards fully autonomous trucks.

However, the city is requiring an operator to be in the “driverless” truck as a safety measure in case something were to go wrong.
