Ohio Bank Robber Kills Police Dog – Gets 45 Years Behind Bars

After fatally shooting an Ohio police dog during a Fishers Foods robbery in January , Kelontre Barefield, 23, has plead guilty and sentenced to 45 years behind bars.

The death of Canton K9, Jethro, ignited a national outrage — police from New York and Maryland reportedly came to Jethro’s funeral. Legislatures also introduced a bill in the wake of Jethro’s death that made the penalty for killing a police K9 harsher.

Stark County Common Pleas Judge Kristin G. Farmer elaborated on what some could view as a harsh sentence, noting that six years is the maximum Barefield can legally serve for shooting Jethro, as well as the firearm charge.

Farmer acknowledged that some people may view the sentence as “too harsh” but noted that the very real death of Jethro, a member of the police force, and that Barefield shot two other officers.

He was sentenced to 11 years total for additonal crimes and 34 years for the Fishers Foods break-in.
