Rower Blake Haxton breaks into Paralympics

Though Columbus-based rower Blake Haxton has faced had his share of obstacles, they didn’t stop him from breaking into the 2016 Paralympic Games.

As a senior in high school on Upper Arlington’s varsity crew team, Haxton suddenly contracted a devastating illness that resulted in the loss of his legs.

It marked the end of his traditional rowing career, but he says the constant support and encouragement of his family and friends convinced him to keep moving.

Not until 2014 did he get back in the boat, where he soon discovered he’d retained some of his speed behind the oars.

Keep an eye out for Haxton in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio De Janeiro, where he’ll be competing in the men’s arms and shoulders single sculls event.
