Columbus Zoo’s Endangered Black Rhino Euthanized

After a year of battling Iron overload syndrome, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium humanely euthanized their beloved endangered black rhino, Kulinda.

Iron overload syndrome commonly ails black rhinos and results in declining liver functions. Kulinda’s health was quickly regressing, and after a poor prognosis, her animal care staff made the decision to euthenize.

At 28 years old, Kulinda surpassed the life expectancy of black rhinos by a decade.

Columbus Zoo also suffered the death of Colo this year, the world’s oldest gorilla.
