Columbus Zoo mourns loss of polar bear

Right on the heels of three polar bear cubs being introduced, a 29-year-old male polar bear named Nanuq was put down this morning at The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

A medical exam revealed that he had liver cancer.

Nanuq lived a full life, exceeding the media age of male polar bear life expectancy by over eight years. In his life time, he was a world traveler; first being rescued from Alaska, then traveling to Wisconsin, then Buffalo, then his final resting place, Columbus. 

“It is always a difficult time when we lose an animal, especially one as beloved as Nanuq,” said Columbus Zoo and Aquarium President and CEO Tom Stalf.
