Gateway Film Center Lands Exclusive French Film Series

The independent, nonprofit Gateway Film Center has partnered with UniFrance films and the French Embassy, and with sponsor Puffin West, to bring Central Ohio “Young French Cinema,” a three-month series that will showcase a new group of emerging French filmmakers each week.

Beginning March 29 and continuing through June 14, the GFC exclusive series will screen a new French film program each Wednesday at 7 p.m., with an encore that Sunday at 2 p.m. Twelve programs will be played in all.

“Contemporary French directors have the film world abuzz, and discovering them early in their careers is a real thrill,” said GFC President and Programmer Chris Hamel. “Young French Cinema expands the film center’s already rich world cinema program by allowing us to bring French films with no U.S. distribution to Columbus.”

As part of the series, two French directors are scheduled to present their screenings in person at the film center. Olivier Babinet will introduce and take questions on Swagger, a documentary on minority teens in a troubled Paris neighborhood. And rapper, songwriter, record producer, actor and now film director Orelsan will visit GFC with his directorial debut, Uncompleted Song.

Several features will be paired with influential French short films. Also, the June 7 screening will be a program of entirely made up of French shorts.

“It’s amazing to see how innovative the style and storytelling is from these up-and-coming artists across such a wide range of material,” said Hamel. “This program proves the next generation of contemporary French filmmakers is changing the direction of film.”

Tickets for Young French Cinema screenings are available online at GatewayFilmCenter.org or on-site at the GFC ticket center.
