Local engineers mimic annoying birds to prevent concussions

How can a tiny bird hammer its head into hard surfaces millions of times over its lifetime and be perfectly fine while humans are out of commission after just one little knock to the noggin?

A team of engineers in Whitehall may have found the answer.

The Q Collar aims to prevent concussions by placing pressure on the jugular vein to send more blood to the skull so the brain doesn’t slosh around when impacted, reports The Dispatch.

This technology was inspired by woodpeckers whose bodies do this naturally.

The design of the collar originated at a South Hamilton Road design firm in Whitehall about 10 years ago.

Currently, the Q Collar is sold in Canada as the Bauer NeuroShield but needs approval from the FDA before it can hit shelves in the U.S.
