12yo dies from fentanyl overdose at birthday party

A 12-year-old boy’s death has been ruled an accidental overdose of fentanyl.

Kanye Champelle was at a sleepover birthday party at a cousin’s house when he became unconscious and unresponsive. Medics were called and removed a piece of chewing gum from his throat. He was taken to the hospital but never recovered. Champelle died in July.

The coroner’s report determined that the gum was not the cause of death but rather, fentanyl. The Narcotics Bureau of the Columbus Police Department are investigating how Champelle could’ve come in contact with the drug.

NBC4i reports that fentanyl is 50 times more powerful than heroin.
