New refuge for Columbus domestic violence victims

LSS CHOICES is the only domestic violence shelter in Franklin County and they have plans to build a new shelter. The Nationwide Foundation will put forth $1.5 million to help them achieve this goal.

There is an overwhelming need for temporary housing for victims of abuse at home here in Columbus. The current shelter is prone to overcrowding as it can only accommodate 51 beds. With the new development, that number will increase to 120. The plan is also to include an outdoor playground and garden for shelter residents. The entire property will be protected by state-of-the-art security.

“Leaving an abusive partner is the most dangerous time for a victim, and it is critical they have a safe place to go and begin to heal from emotional and physical wounds,” said Sue Villilo, executive director of LSS CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence. “We need a new shelter with the capacity and resources to help end the cycle of violence and provide essential services to victims in our community.”
