Counselor talked down gunman at Scioto HS

Last week, an active shooter situation played out at Scioto High, a school for emotionally disturbed students. The suspect attended the school; 18-year-old Adan Abdullahi.

This Dispatch reports that the school counselor is the person responsible for diffusing the situation that played out inside the walls at Scioto High.

Van Chambers, 62, heard a loud boom and knew he had to get to the sound and fast. When the gun smoke cleared, there stood Abdullahi, a student Chambers had met with just that morning. He and Abdullahi had a strong relationship so he knew not to get too excited and to make him feel in control of the situation.

After a few more shots and distracting Abdullahi enough to allow another teacher to escape his aim, (no one was harmed in the situation), Chambers suggested the two go somewhere and talk.

Abdullahi surrendered his gun that Chambers then stowed away in a closet. After about 30 minutes of conversating, both Abdullahi and Chambers walked out of the building to encounter the police.

Abdullahi is being held on a $950,000 bond.
