Some Hilliard Schools to Start Later in 2017

You can actually let your kids sleep in – Hilliard City Schools  has announced later start times for 6th grade and middle schools.

These students will start their day at 8 AM beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, according to NBC4i.

The decision comes after an extensive study conducted to examine the effects of start times on the district.

The district also changed start times for Alton Darby, Norwich and Scioto Darby elementary schools to 9:20am.

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and a 2015 study by the CDC recommends that schools start at the earliest 8:30 am, though less than one in five middle and high schools ever do.

Hilliard City Schools said that an even later change in their school start times could cost the district an extra $130,000, and add three additional bus routes.

“Getting enough sleep is important for students’ health, safety, and academic performance,” said Anne Wheaton to NBC4i, a CDC epidemiologist who led the study. “Early school start times, however, are preventing many adolescents from getting the sleep they need.”

The  CDC states that students who don’t get enough sleep are often more prone to obesity, the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and low academic performance.
