Update: About a month after 37 Ohio State fraternities were placed on suspension for violating code of student conduct, they’ve been given their requirements to be fully reinstated.

Here is the criteria, per 10TV:

  • Chapters cannot resume any social events until they bring forth a plan on how to host those events and a calendar of events. Chapters must also note if alcohol will be served at the events.
  • No more than 20 events with alcohol can be hosted in each of the following time frames: Aug. 15 through Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 through Aug. 14.
  • Recruitment plans need to include vision statements containing commitments to hazing prevention and healthy and safe alcohol-free recruitment practices.
  • Chapters must provide a detailed plan for conducting new member education. The plan must include a vision statement, health and safety plans, descriptions of the new member process, and a list of events.

11/17/2017: Ohio State University is putting most fraternities in time-out after all their misbehavior.

10TV reports that most fraternities have been suspended from social, recruitment, and new member activities, effective immediately. To be exact, 37 fraternities have been affected.

Here is a list of all Greek Life chapters at Ohio State.

This comes after 11 frats were subject to investigation this semester for violations of student code of conduct: Alpha Epsilon Pi, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Chi, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Zeta Beta Tau.

Here’s what the university said, per 10TV:

Ohio State is suspending all social, recruitment and new member activities for Interfraternity Council (IFC) chapters effective immediately. This semester the university is investigating the most cases in recent years of possible violations of the Code of Student Conduct by IFC chapters. 11 of the 37 IFC chapters have been under investigation since the school year began. The majority of these cases involve hazing and/or alcohol. The university will not tolerate behavior that puts the health and safety of its students at risk.

Ohio State is taking this proactive step based on the significantly high number of investigations this semester, not on the nature of any specific case or cases. This action will allow the IFC community to pause to reflect and create individual, actionable strategies to ensure that the culture of their organization is aligned with the stated values of Ohio State’s Greek community, responsibilities outlined in the university’s Code of Student Conduct and expectations of their respective national or international organization. The university looks forward to working with the IFC community to set a positive path forward.
