Oh weltschmerz: German Village bakery closes after 50 years

A 50-year staple of German Village closed abruptly, leading the way for a new international restaurant to enter the scene. Juergens German Bakery and Restaurant at 525 Fourth St. closed earlier this month with no comment from the owners. In its place will be a German eatery ran by a trio of men well-suited for the job.

A.J. Ndreu, his cousin, Enis Ndreu, and business partner Elidon Hizmo operate Wurst und Bier in Crosswoods at the northeast corner of the U.S. Route 23 and Interstate 270 interchange, reports This Week News. Guests at the yet-to-be-named restaurant will definitely be yelling, “Prost!” but the style will be different than their other German venture.

The space will go under the knife (axe) for three months and come out with two bars—one upstairs with a German theme and one downstairs bar with a tapas-style menu.
