Sequels usually suck but not in case of Fox in the Snow

On Saturday, Columbus residents braved the cold weather to check out Fox in the Snow’s new digs. Despite a high of 16 degrees, a steady stream of customers bundled in coats and scarves packed the café to buy pastries and lattes on opening day. The smells of coffee and bacon (courtesy of Fox in the Snow’s famous egg sandwiches) added a welcome coziness to the chilly morning. Baristas expertly juggled multiple tasks, serving made-to-order drinks and wiping up melted snow tracked in by dozens of boots.

The German Village space marks the second location for the third-wave coffee shop. The original opened in Italian Village in 2014 and has since become one of Columbus’s most popular cafés, prompting owners Lauren Culley and Jeff Excell to expand. (Don’t expect the second spot to lighten traffic at the first one, though – on Saturday, the Italian Village location was as busy as ever.)

The new coffee shop is located on the corner of Thurman and Jaeger. Its vintage brick building has been home to a movie theater, a pharmacy, and an art gallery over the years.

Despite the crowd, the space felt light and airy. The café has a minimalist industrial vibe similar to the first location, with exposed-brick walls, geometric light fixtures, and concrete floors. Wooden tables and chairs offer plenty of seating. Lush greenery from Stump Plants adds visual interest, while large windows overlooking the street fill the room with light. For kids and the young at heart, there’s an old-school toy vending machine in the back that spits out stickers with Fox in the Snow’s logo.

Fans of the original will be happy to know that Fox in the Snow is serving up old favorites in the new location, like their signature pastries and pour-over coffee. And while the shop was full all morning on Saturday, additional floor space around the centralized counter made it feel less crowded than its Italian Village counterpart.

Based on the number of dine-in and carry-out customers on opening day alone, German Village appears to have welcomed Fox in the Snow to the neighborhood’s landscape warmly.

Fox in the Snow German Village is located at 210 Thurman Avenue, Columbus, OH 43206. It’s open from 7 AM-5 PM Monday-Friday and 8 AM-5 PM on weekends.
