614Sports: Columbus looks to hit another grand slam as host

Crew SC Has Seen Enough of La La Land This Summer

The game against the LA Galaxy this past Saturday night was a homecoming for Columbus Crew SC’s #11 Gyasi Zardes as he returned to his hometown to face his former club, as well as former Crew forward #11 Ola Kamara.

And there was also this 6’5” beast on the pitch—basically a giant for a field player in soccer—named #9 Zlatan Ibrahimović on the Galaxy squad.

Unfortunately, the LA Galaxy pounded Columbus Crew SC 4-nil. Coupled with the 2-nil loss against LAFC in So Cal on June 23, Crew SC is probably content to know there are no more regular season games in California for the remainder of the 2018 campaign.

Despite the 20/20 clarity of the burgeoning VAR technology that has proven to be quite helpful in the World Cup in Russia, this match in LA provided a counter argument—hopefully just an anomaly—to that positive sentiment with a couple questionable calls by VAR as governed by MLS.

These miscues included a #11 Zardes/Galaxy own-goal that was reversed about a minute after LA went up 1-nil late the first half, as well as a curious penalty that was given to the Galaxy following review in the second half.

Regardless, Crew SC played poorly once again in Los Angeles this summer.

Columbus Crew SC (30 points) stay on the road as they travel across the country to play New York City FC (34 points) at Yankee Stadium this Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET.
