Texting 911 launches this summer

614now Staff

Texting 911 will become a reality beginning June 1.

This technology will greatly benefit hearing impaired or deaf individuals, injured victims, or those in danger of being heard like those in domestic violence situations, for example.

Once a text is received, it is almost immediately rerouted to three public safety answering points which dispatch emergency workers.

Per the Dispatch, the three brains and their members are:

  • Columbus, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Grove City
  • Dublin (which includes Hilliard, Upper Arlington and Norwich and Washington townships fire departments) will ink up with Westerville and Delaware County
  • Gahanna, Whitehall, Bexley, Pickerington, and other jurisdictions in eastern Franklin County.

The “text-to-911” program has been in queue for several years now but it’s taken significant time for governments and technology advancements to come around.
