Kicking off with an all new backdrop in Franklinton, shows for Independents’ Day are set to begin over the weekend. It’s bigger than it has been in the past and has a stage strictly dedicated to EDM music, areas for drag queens and Irish step dancers. The organizers have ensured that across the stages and through the weekend, all of their bases were covered. Music wise, all day Saturday there will be Writer’s Block Hip Hop, giving way to the rappers and hip-hop artists of the city including J Rawls, Hafrican and others. Electro-pop Damn the Witch Siren is set to take the stage 2 p.m. Saturday and Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons will be performing at 9 p.m. Saturday.

While it is best known for the music acts, Independents’ Day has included film showings Friday night with “A Million Miles Away” and then film shorts following it. The weekend isn’t just about music or just about art, the festival, at its core is meant to celebrate the independent people across Columbus.
