The Ohio Senate approved a bill that will offer legal protection to dogs, cats, and other pets in situations of domestic violence, stalking and other alleged abuse. National studies show that 48 percent of domestic violence victims reported that they delayed leaving a dangerous situation because they feared for the pet’s safety and didn’t have a way to remove or take the animal somewhere safe. And a 2012 survey by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network found that 40 percent of domestic violence victims reported that their pets were threatened, harmed or killed. If passed, Ohio will become the 28th state to offer this kind of legal protection to animals.
