Time for your own personal Red, White, and BOOM
A bill has been making its way through the Ohio Statehouse that would legalize buying consumer-grade fireworks like bottle rockets, firecrackers and Roman candles. Currently the state does allows you to buy them, but stipulates that they be transported outside of the state within 24 hours. The new bill would lift this regulation.
While the new bill would certainly create epic stories like “that one time your Uncle Tim decided to put on a mini Red, White, and BOOM in the background”, healthcare professionals and safety advocates have been voicing their disapproval. Dr. Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, stated that one in four children and 45 percent of those injured by fireworks are bystanders.
If passed, the bill will take effect Jan. 1, 2016. Which leaves you plenty of time to figure out how to firecracker-proof your mailbox from the neighborhood kids.
