Columbus Marathon kicks off Sunday
7,000 full marathoners and 11,000 half marathoners will flood downtown Columbus Sunday for this year’s Columbus Marathon and Saturday for the health and fitness expo. 24 of the 26.2 miles will be dedicated patient miles for Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Each of the “Patient Champions” are current patients at the hospital and submitted their stories via social media. The winners were then chosen based on diagnosis, age and how much they really wanted to cheer on runners during their designated mile. Each champion then is encouraged to create a theme for their specific mile. For the athletes, every mile will be a story, a journey through the patients lives. Runners have also been encouraged to raise money for the hospital through the marathon.
