After a decade, the planetarium at COSI reopens

For years it has sat empty and unused, but Saturday, the planetarium will get a new breath of life. Financial challenges had shut down the planetarium a few years after their move to Broad Street, and for years now, it has sat empty. The dome remains the same size at 60 feet and it will hold 221 people, but the actual system itself has gotten an upgrade. With the advancement in the past years (shocking) the original system to star gaze indoors was dated and now the planetarium boasts a digital system and the operator can take viewers to Saturn, get a glimpse of what space looks like from other planets and then go back to other points easily.

A crowd funding campaign helped make the planetarium a reality with the goal to raise $1 million for the restoration.

After a decade of dust, COSI is reopening it’s planetarium. Monday the center announced the official open date for the would be Nov. 22. and it will have a few upgrades with a Digistar 5 digital Fulldome system. “Besides classic sky shows, the technology allows us to present programming such as the inner workings of the human heart, the mysteries of an underwater volcano, or even a virtual ride on a digital roller coaster,” said COSI President & CEO David Chesebrough, according to Columbus Underground. The new planetarium will have a 60-foot dome and is set to seat 200.
