In 2012, a Norfolk Southern tanker-car derailed off the tracks near the fairgrounds causing a fiery crash that has been imprinted on many Columbusites minds in the two years following. New information from National Transportation Safety Board was released Thursday in its final report on the incident. The cause: a broken track. That broken track caused the train to slip the rails and a car from the ethanol carrying train to come off the track.

It was then up in flames, causing two injuries and the area was evacuated. “The probable cause of the accident was a broken rail that exhibited evidence of rolling contact fatigue,” the report read.
