Solar trash compactors have been bought by the city, but they are still waiting to be installed at their intended Short North homes. The purchases use solar energy to compact the trash and recyclable materials deposited in the cans. Putting the solar cans on the street though have proved more difficult than some thought. “We had thought they would have been in use by now,” Leslie Strader, a policy advisor in the Office of Environmental Stewardship said according to Columbus Underground, “but they are more difficult to install than a standard trash/recycling container because you need to have the space, the sunlight, the approval of the neighborhood on placement.”
