Yearlong Yuletide brings cheer to Columbus woman

For three years, Sharon Prater’s Christmas tree hasn’t moved. “The Christmas tree when it went up in 2011 was my savior,” she said. During that year, her husband was injured in a car crash, then he lost his job. Then came the high medical bills, a sister with serious health issues, and a divorce. She soon realized that with all this, she was also behind in mortgage payments and about to lose the house. But her Christmas tree stood as a beacon of solace.

“I just go in there and turn that tree on and it just opens my heart and it makes me feel like things will be OK,” she said.

After getting help from Homeport Columbus (which helps people in foreclosure work out a plan to keep their home), Prater is no longer in foreclosure and no longer behind in payments. And she still has her Christmas tree.
