Controversy or not, FMMF is here

FMMF for better or worse has been plastered all over local (and national) media outlets, either defending or criticizing the choice to include R. Kelly as a headliner following rumors of child predation, rape and a trail for making child porn for which he was acquitted. Fuming locals, bands and even those on the bill under R. Kelly’s name protested the choice with such vigor that eventually, the festival and R. Kelly split. He wasn’t replaced on the lineup, but there are still plenty of other acts to see at the first Fashion Meets Music Festival.

Here’s who to watch this weekend (other than the obvious choice of seeing the headliners).

Cold War Kids
The indie rockers range from power pop and slamming keyboards with “Miracle Mile” to heart-filled blues. The band formed in 2004 out in California and have been churning out seemingly sporadic sounding music spanning from the dark lyrics housed within second album “Loyalty to Loyalty” to the ever so slightly more electronic (and recent) “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts.”

Maps & Atlases
Hailing from Chicago these folky, experimental rockers have the beards to make them legit. (But really check out those beards.) After the group met in art school, the band came together. At times dubbed math rock (constantly changing meters, with rhythmic complexity) they have toured the country on festival circuits and bopped around with other bands like Ra Ra Riot and Portugal. The Man.

Kishi Bashi
He’s also known for touring around with of Montreal and Regina Spektor, the indie pop singer has also taken to the streets as his own group, Kishi Bashi. At moments his music is light with violins piercing through tracks creating delicate pop tunes that come near ethereal.

The Receiver
Want to go local? Check out The Receiver. The brother duo have even taken the stage with St. Vincent, and brother Casey Cooper studied music composition at Ohio State (which led to a jump on their music career).
