Will the riverfront ever see the Santa Maria again?

Wednesday began the dismantling of the Santa Maria boat and it might not ever be put back together. The replica that has rested in the Scioto River is looking like it won’t be re-assembled after it is dismantled unless someone drums up $1 million for the boat. Because its resting place is hindering the Scioto Greenways project, it had to be moved and repairs to the boat are mounting at a costly reality. The wooden deck along with other parts are what is in need of repair, but some organizations might band together to raise the funds, the Dispatch reported.

The Santa Maria, an odd but lasting attraction plopped into the Scioto River will be removed for the first time in over two decades. The mass overhaul of the riverfront for the Scioto Greenways project needs the boat out of the way to continue its reign over the river (because it seems like the project has been making a lot of obvious progress and what not lately). In the next few weeks the boat will be removed from the river, but not permanently. Plans have been made for the original boat maker to return to make repairs to the Santa Maria while it’s land bound.
