Infection test could cut down on antibiotic overuse

A test that can determine if a sinus infection is caused by a virus or bacteria, the brain child of researchers at Ohio State and Nationwide Children’s, could cut back on overuse of antibiotics, according to Columbus Business First. This breakthrough would reduce the rapid evolution of germs and diseases that become resistant to medications. ENTvantage Diagnostics Inc. out of Texas has been given the license to the test so that it can commercialize it. Both Ohio State and Nationwide Children’s will benefit from the deal with equity in the company, royalties, reimbursement of patent expenses and other incentives, the paper reported. What ENTvantage will do is transform the technology into a commercially available swab for the nose to administer the test.
