Wednesday night in Cleveland, the historic gubernatorial debate took place at the City Club…without the actual governor. This is the first year all the candidates haven’t debated since 1978, and Democratic candidate Ed FitzGerald and Green Party candidate Anita Rios took the opportunity to slam Governor John Kasich. “There was some very pointed criticism of his performance as governor, and he wasn’t here to defend himself. And that’s not great for voters. That’s not great for Ohio,” Dan Moulthrop, the City Club’s CEO, said according to the Dispatch. FitzGerald called avoiding the debate as “cowardly” and Rios said his absence was a sign of the sad state of politics.
