Newest city council member a pioneer in diversity

When democrat Shannon Hardin was appointed to the open city council position, he was a first of many things. Hardin is the first openly gay, black man to take a council position in Columbus, and as a former aid to mayor Michael Coleman, the mayor pushed for his appointment. “What I will represent is a young, diverse, new voice from the community to council,” said Hardin, 27, according to the Dispatch. “Young folks don’t always feel like they have a seat at the table, and I hope that is the spirit I will represent.” Following a 45-minute meeting, Hardin was selected unanimously.
