Almost all of the attention in the film world this week has been on the Seth Rogen / James Franco comedy “The Interview.” But there are actually some other new movies opening up on the big screen in Columbus this weekend for you to check out. They include:
“Big Eyes” – From director Tim Burton. Starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. A biographical drama focused on American artist Margaret Keane and her husband Walter. When Margaret’s work becomes incredibly popular in the 1950’s, Walter claims the work as his own.
“The Gambler” – Stars Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, Brie Larson and Jessica Lange. Directed by Rupert Wyatt who also gave us “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” Sadly, “The Gambler” is not a bio-pic about the singer Kenny Rogers. Instead, its a crime-drama remake of a 1974 film of the same name. Marky Mark plays a lit professor, leading the life of a high-stakes gambler on the side.
“Into the Woods” – Stars Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine. Directed by Rob Marshall who gave us the most recent ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film. “Into the Woods” is based on the stage musical combining plots and characters from various Grimm fairy tales including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack & the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella. A witch (Streep) puts a curse on a banker and his wife, rendering them childless. The couple ventures…wait for it…wait for it…INTO THE WOODS…to find what they need to break the spell.
“Unbroken” – Directed by Angelina Jolie. Starring Jack Cook. From a screenplay written in-part by the Coen brothers. True story. Based on the life of an American Olympic runner and World War II vet. Survived 47 days in a raft after having been shot down in the war before being captured and spending 2 1/2 years as a prisoner of war.
