Don’t want a smart electric meter? That’s okay, AEP will just charge you extra. The company has submitted a request to charge $31.80 a month for customers who opt to not have a “smart” electric meter which they say will cover the cost of having a technician come out and read the meter rather than the “smart” meter simply sending it back to the utility company automatically, according to the Dispatch. Watchdogs Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel say that price is a bit steep though and argue that $10.49 a month would suffice.
