Computer troubles? Ask your 5-year-old niece
The Hour of Code campaign started this week and while some schools are learning computer coding through generic lesson plans, the (all girls) pre-engineering class at Hilliard Weaver Middle School wrote code to program robots to spin their wheels and flash LED lights.
Activities and lessons on coding are taking place all week, but many central Ohio schools started yesterday. Kindergartners at a school in Dublin tried to make a robot walk, jump and turn while boys at a Bexley elementary school tried to program monkeys to find a banana. These activities are part of a push from many Columbus area schools, and their partnership with Code.org, to add more computer-science classes and possibly start coding lessons as early as elementary school.
The push for more computer-science classes with younger kids will hopefully bolster this new skillset and enable students to access better and exciting jobs. This apparently means that when I need help with my Mac freezing, I won’t be calling tech support, but instead will be calling and asking for my 5-year old niece’s help.
