Columbus pilot dies in crash near Lake Erie

The Statehighway Patrol said that Richard Schimizze (from suburban Columbus) was piloting a single-engine plane when it crashed Monday afternoon in an an open area behind a Wal-Mart just after taking off from Erie-Ottawa International Airport in Port Clinton. Surveillance footage from the area near Lake Erie shows the plane taking off, then banking left before nose-diving into the ground.
No one on the ground was injured and investigators are continuing their investigation at the scene today.
