Fire breaks out in Whitehall post office

Firefighters responded to a fire at the Whitehall post office on (82) Robinwood Ave. just before 7:30 p.m. last night. The fire was so severe that the firefighters weren’t able to get into the building and a defensive order* was given by the commanding chief.

It took almost 20 minutes to get the fire under control, but luckily no one was inside the post office at the time and no injuries were reported. It is unclear if any packages were damaged though.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

*known as “surround and drown”, an exterior form of attacking the fire when it’s not possible to approach the fire directly or the structure isn’t safe (because of direct flame, heat, structural collapse, or presence of hazardous materials). The goal is to protect nearby structures from the fire and prevent the fire from spreading.
