Get ready. Salt prices going up as many anticipate cold winter
It might still be hot and muggy outside, but many are already looking a few months ahead toward what is likely to be an icy, cold winter again. The city is going to attempt to clear the roads clear (hopefully) and salt prices are rising. ODOT has been stocking up on salt like a squirrel for winter, and prices have hit from $40 to $70. But on separate winter contracts, many counties are fresh out of luck (at least if they think they are going to get a good price). Around Ohio some areas are seeing a ton of salt go for $100, according to the Dispatch. Winter is coming, and the state will have about 700,000 tons of salts at the open of the season. Last year though, the state tore through one million tons for the first time ever, which isn’t all that shocking.
