Smokey the Bear retirement pending
Smokey the Bear was slated to be replaced next year with a newer model, but there’s a small hitch in the funds coming through though, reported Columbus Business First. Several lawmakers had more questions about what those funds would be going to exactly, and the Ohio Controlling Board has to approve those funds first. Now briefings will be set up before the ODNR will have Cincinnati-based LifeFormations Inc. create a new Smokey for the delight of fair-goers.

55-year-old Smokey the Bear heading for retirement
Smokey the Bear has loomed over children at the Ohio State Fair for decades, and this year’s fair will be its last. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is planning to set aside $80,250 for a new bear, according to Columbus Business First. Each year at the fair, Smokey the Bear reminds kids not to start forest fires and (semi-creepily) talks to passersby. In bear years, 55-years-old is a good long life, really longer than most real bears live.
