Tear gas drifts into elementary school, teacher in hospital

UPDATE: Columbus police said cadets had set off tear gas while they were training at Cooper Stadium in field force riot. The tear gas has an effective range of 40 feet, and the cadets were sprayed during their training, but the wind took the gas 3,000 feet away from the site toward the elementary school. The police have said they are investigating the incident and looking into alternate areas for training so that it doesn’t happen again in the future and apologized for the problem. Parents said that some students faces were irritated and some began to cry because of the gas.

Fourteen kids at Sullivant Elementary School were picked up by parents after tear gas drifted into the school following a cadet exercise at Cooper Stadium. (They also got in an accident on the way this morning: read here.) A pregnant teacher was also taken to the hospital. It occurred around 8:30 a.m. Friday morning and the school is now back in session and the school is tear-gas free.
