The legendary soulful singer is heading to Columbus to sing Friday at the Rhythm on the River at Bicentennial Park, but there’s a lot on her mind with the current issues in Ferguson. Staples started her career young, singing with her father and performing as an opening act at many Martin Luther King, Jr. rallies, and the protests going on in Missouri seem all too familiar to the singer. “I just said, ‘Oh lord, it’s still here.’ But I’m still here. I’m a living witness, and I feel like I’m supposed to do this. I still have my health and my strength, and as long as I’m here I’m going to be fighting. My work isn’t done yet,” she told Alive. Staples doubles as a social advocate and a singer and her voice and performances are still just as passionate at 75 years old.
