Vigil held for recovering “Miracle Man” Bill Lewis

A prayer vigil took place last night for Bill Lewis (engineer for the city of Columbus), who doctors are calling “the miracle man” after surgeons said his recovery is unprecedented and that they didn’t expect him to survive.

Lewis was the second pedestrian struck after last week’s truck and school bus collision along Broad and High St. The impact caused the school bus to jump the curb onto the sidewalk where it struck OSU student Stephanie Fibelkorn, who was killed instantly.  First responders said it was unlikely Lewis (Fibelkorn’s college mentor) would make it. Family members say the efforts of firefighters and paramedics gave him a fighting chance. “Within nine minutes he was on the operating table from the accident,” said Jennifer Hansen.  Doctors had to amputate Lewis’ left leg and even now his vitals are still too unstable for doctors to assess the extent of the damage.

Family and friends are asking everyone to donate blood, saying the selflessness of strangers undoubtedly helped save Lewis’ life and last weekend, Fibelkorn’s parents asked everyone to keep Lewis in their thoughts.

Despite Lewis’ unstable condition, and that he hasn’t regained consciousness, the family felt that yesterday he could hear and was reacting to the sound of his wife’s voice.
